ABOUT THE BOOK
The Logic of Language Series is a classroom practice Assessment and Remediation Strategy Series intended to be a resource especially for English First Additional Language (FAL) teachers in providing ideas for ways to incorporate these assessment and remedial elements into their classroom teaching strategies and lesson plans.
The Series is a carefully developed and well-structured programme which aims to assess and provide remedial support in the foundations and development of literacy.
The REGR Learners Resource Book 1 is the first in a series of these resource books and forms a holistic approach to learning a language. The Resource books focus on reading and spelling skills and builds phenomic awareness by taking learners through a step by step process to learn and also address barriers to learning and experienced by individual or group of learners experienced by individual or group learners to ensure that thtey can competently progress to achieve the CAPS outcomes. These skills are inter-related and build on each other to teach learners at Foundation Phase and beyond about the building blocks of reading and spelling.
This first Resource Book achieves the literacy and language development outcomes through learners practicing how to write and discriminate easily with letter sounds of the alphabet while also providing assessment and remedial support to those learners who have difficulties in these specififc areas. This helps prevent hasty diagnosis of learning barriers such as dyslexia.
The Resource Book further provides teachers with tools and resources as well as practical strategies to work with learners in a variety of conditions to ensure that they are gradually mainstreamed into their grade level classes. The teacher can therefore assess individual progress and pace in a highly structured way with each setting requiring the teacher to use different ways and strategies of organizing the classroom and of designing and presenting lessons. However, some basic elements underlie all good language instruction:
- Interactive lessons with hands-on activities and cooperative learning;
- Encouragement of creativity and discovery;
- Versatility and flexibility;
- Enhancement and support of the mainstream curriculum;
- Opportunities for all learners to feel successful;
- Accommodation of the needs of students at different levels of ability; and
- Integration of language skills, thinking skills, and content skills.
